I have been blessed with a unique sounding voice and I am not afraid to take chances

i just read the news that gene pitney has died and while i won’t attempt an obituary i wanted to mark it with a post all the same. gene pitney was exactly the kind of unique and masterful vocalist that we are lacking in the current music scene. our obsession with ‘perfection’ only results in the vast sea of pop-idol blandness that would never allow a gene pitney, or a roy orbison or even a del shannon the same kind of success withought smoothing out everything that makes a vocal interesting and special.
there is an obitury on the bbc site here and some other good links here, here and here.

  1. Saw Gene Pitney perform live in the picture house in Lothian Road, Edinburgh in the early seventies. His voice was so powerful, he hardly needed the amplification.
It was a memorable performance.. did I never mention it to you?
    See ya

  2. audio! yay for me!

i love all three of those songs so much – along with many others (especially ‘she’s a heartbreaker’ and ‘the man who shot liberty valance’) but i just had to include the marc almond duet because it’s one of those singularly weird and wonderful pop moments. i absolutely loved it when it came out – and it was my introduction to the two (very different) worlds of both gene pitney and marc almond!
