Yankee go home with me

not a recent article but i just found these quotes from russel t davies about ‘torchwood’ which are really encouraging. the whole ‘x-rated’ thing did concern me slightly (queer as who?) but it sound very much like he wants to push the show forward rather than just down the gutter. can’t believe i’ve still got to wait untill autumn though. just that tantalising titbit at the end of the christmas ‘who’ to keep me going.

“Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies talked to SFX Magazine about Torchwood – the recently announced spin-off series which will star John Barrowman as Captain Jack.

Season 1 of Torchwood consists of 13 episodes, to be shown in the UK on BBC 3, and it will focus on a “renegade bunch of investigators”. The series will be darker and more adult in tone then Doctor Who. Filming starts in early 2006.

Doctor Who’s ‘Christmas Invasion’ episode will contains hints about Torchwood. More hints will follow throughout the second season. Eagle-eyed viewers will already have heard ‘Torchwood’ mentioned among one of Rose’s answers in the ‘Weakest Link’ game featured in the Season 1 finale, ‘Parting of the Ways’.

Russell is set to write 2 episodes of Torchwood, most of his focus will be on Season 3 of Doctor Who. Russell comments that thanks to the expected watershed slot (9pm) for the show, “we can be a bit more visceral, more violent, and more sexual, if we want to. Though bear in mind that it’s very teenage to indulge yourself in blood and gore, and Torchwood is going to be smarter than that. But it’s the essential difference between BBC One at 7pm, and BBC Three at say, 9pm. That says it all – instinctively, every viewer can see the huge difference there.”

Torchwood is still in the early stages of development, but there will probably some production crossover with Doctor Who, “they’re two very different shows, so each will have its own identity.” Writers currently onboard for Torchwood are PJ Hammond (ITV’s Sapphire and Steel) and Chris Chibnall (BBC One’s Born and Bred). “
